Is it Rubbish?

Dearest Families,

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed a restful 2-week break as a family.

As we prepare for the upcoming Unit of Study (UOS): Is it Really Rubbish? I am reminded of the book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and The Teaching of Plants. Author Robin Wall Kimmerer writes "That's what I was taught: use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." This quote aligns perfectly with our upcoming UOS.  I am curious what our students will share about their thinking during our inquiry into how waste is generated, the impact it has on the environment and what action we can take to reduce waste. How will they embrace the teachings Kimmerer shares? What will it mean to them?  I am particularly excited to deep dive into the concepts of needs and wants.  I have a feeling I will be doing a lot of reflection myself!  To be honest, that is one of the great joys of working with children; our reflective practice is influenced by their wonder and discovery.

How can you help at school:

Many of you have heard the term "loose parts". Loose parts is a term that refers to any kind of materials that are moveable and manipulatable.  Exploration of loose parts help students develop both creativity and critical thinking, as well as many other qualities and skills highlighted in the UWCSEA profile. The K2 team is asking for help collecting loose parts of recycled and reusable materials (like cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls, egg cartons, fabric etc...). Just please remember to send them in a reusable bag!

Please find below our curriculum letter and as always, thank you for your support!
