Joyful Literacy

Dearest Families,

You have probably noticed your child reading and writing all the time. Maybe it's reading environmental print like signs around town or their favorite book or labeling items around the house or making lists. This is a very magical time for your child as they recognize that they are readers and writers!

As parents we want to help our children find the tools they need to succeed in life. Having access to information and understanding through the printed word is an absolute necessity. But reading is more than just a practical tool. Through books we can enrich our minds; we can also relax and enjoy some precious moments and down time.

With your help, your child can begin a lifelong relationship with the printed word, so they grow into adults who read and write easily and frequently whether for work, knowledge, or pleasure.

Tamara Snooks, our K2 Grade Curriculum Coordinator has put together an amazing video to share ideas with families about how to support your child’s reading development at home. The video includes information about our reading program and the leveled texts we use for instruction. Below are a few joyful literacy activities!

Some joyful literacy activities:

  • Read aloud daily

  • Listen to audiobooks

  • Visit the amazing libraries in Singapore or explore a new bookstore!

  • Read to grandparents or family members (virtually), siblings or stuffed animals

  • Keep a family journal of activities and children can label and read them to you!

  • Create a book making space at home as well as reading nooks

  • Make trips with your child around town, to read signs, notices etc..

We look forward to hearing about some joyful literacy activities you do at home!

As always, thank you for your support.

K2 Team
