Home Reading

Dearest Families,

Next week we will begin our home reading program. We will begin with the same routine that your child was familiar with in K1, which is to bring home three books to share with you. Students can change these  or keep the books for a week.  Actually, you may find that your child will bring home the same book. Re-reading is an important aspect of reading development as familiarity enables students to develop different reading skills that are not always attainable in a first viewing. There is also  confidence as a reader when your child can retell the story. We ask these books to "live" in your child's blue folder and come to school each day.

To support your child when reading books we encourage you to:

  • Set up a reading routine and comfortable space
  • Demonstrate how to bring a character's voice to life
  • Ask the about the characters, actions, thoughts and feelings.
  • Ask them to recount the details of the story
  • Prompt their reflection with both open and closed questions, including explaining their opinion about a story
  • Talking about the problem of the story
The books that are brought home will reflect your child's individuality and interest.  They will be bringing home all kinds of texts including, as the term progresses, leveled texts. We will share more about this later.

The conversation and wonderment you have while reading with your child is the most impactful tool they will have at this age. Enjoy your reading time together and foster not only a love but the JOY of reading that will last a lifetime

in partnership,
Evelyn Hurtado
